In the presence of the analyte, the beads come into close proximity. The excitation of the Donor beads provokes the release of singlet oxygen molecules that triggers a cascade of energy transfer in the Acceptor beads, resulting in a sharp peak of light emission at 615 nm. N-terminal prohormone of brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) is a 76-amino acid sequence cleaved from the N-terminal end of brain natriuretic peptide. NT-proBNP is an inactive protein that is used for the screening for acute congestive heart failure. Serum and plasma levels of NT-proBNP varies between individuals and generally increase with age. The physiological role of NT-proBNP is not clear, while the function of BNP is to protect the cardiovascular system from volume overload by regulating salt and water homeostasis. NT-proBNP has a longer biological half-life and therefore is the preferred biomarker for detection and analysis.
